French college students, Marie and Alex, head to Alex's secluded farmhouse in hopes of studying for their exams without distractions. While settling in, a man breaks into the home and brutally murders Alex's family while Marie tries to hide herself from the killer. When the killer binds and kidnaps Alex, Marie follows him, attempting saving her friend and, along the way, running into some dangerous obstacles.
I just finished watching 'High Tension', and I have to say, I liked it so much that I think I'm going to watch it a second time with my father. <br/><br/>It's kind of difficult to pinpoint exactly what makes 'High Tension' so great. After all, it's essentially just another 'Home Invasion' film with a plot that's very similar to 'Ils' and 'The Strangers'. However, Alexandre Aja really knows how to build up suspense-after all, they don't call the movie 'High Tension' for no reason. If you're like me, a person who's become desensitized to most gory or 'scary' films, than I would definitely recommend this one, because unlike so many other movies with similar plots, 'High Tension' is so incredibly suspenseful that I literally could not relax while watching it in my bed.<br/><br/>The only drawback of the movie in my opinion is the ending-but once I got used to the little plot twist, and accepted it, I actually felt the movie was better for it.<br/><br/>Also, and pardon me for going all over the place about this one, but it's just so god damned good. This movie has your heart pounding right up to the very end. I was so impressed with this movie that I even contemplated watching Aja's remake of 'The Hill Have Eyes', which I saw long ago in theaters and don't recall liking it that much (although I will say I thought the second one was real good).<br/><br/>Another thing that I liked about this movie (as opposed to 'Inside') was that it doesn't just rely on gore to creep the viewer out. In a way it was similar to 'Martyrs' in that sense. When the movie does get violent, it's quite graphic, but nothing ever seems like 'gore for gores sake'. When I was a teenager I was all about watching the most graphic horror films available (I was definitely into 'Ichi The Killer' and the first two collections of the 'Guinea Pig' series). Nowadays though, I don't really care for violence without substance (don't get me wrong, I still love 'Ichi', but in retrospect I found the Guinea Pig Series rather boring). After watching some of the most extreme 'torture-porn' titles, I kind of got to the point where that kind of thing didn't have that much effect on me-I honestly found 'Inside' so boring that I turned it off about 3/4 of the way through, because the gratuitous violence seemed so unnecessary, and that's what I love about movies like 'High Tension', 'Kill List' and 'Martyrs'-sure, they truly are quite violent, but I never felt like the three listed films tried to just rely on the gore for shock value or scares. <br/><br/>If you're looking for a heart-pounding, truly frightening horror movie, then check out 'High Tension', it's one of those rare horror movies that one comes upon every once in a great while that truly achieves what it sets out to do-scare the living crap out of you.
High Tension is a great movie…to watch once. And because of which, I'm so sorry I bought this on BluRay.<br/><br/>When I first watched this, several years ago, I loved it…up to the ending. I will not spoil anything in this review, but that ending completely disturbed me. Yeah, I get it; there's a huge revelation in the finale, but I thought it was completely unnecessary. It was such a FUN ride up to the end "trick." <br/><br/>The movie is the basic, albeit wonderful, slasher tale that I love and grew up on focusing on two female friends that head to one of the girl's estate and family's isolated home to…study. Well, no studying takes place when a dirty, old, fat male comes to visit with his equally repulsive van.<br/><br/>After slaughtering anyone in his way – including a CHILD – he takes his live bait, one of the young college students and leaves her friend to attempt to get her free.<br/><br/>There really is no depth to the story here, but it's great for those, like me, who loved the stalking killer, much like Michael Myers in the Halloween series or Jason Voorhees in the Friday the 13th franchise. It's bloody, grotesque, obscene and thankfully, while in subtitles, barely anyone talks for the second half. But…<br/><br/>…Once you hit that "secret" that you *may* not know yet, the rest of the fun carnage is fruitless. In fact, with this second viewing, not only did I remember the twist, it was the only thing on my mind throughout this second, and probably last, viewing.<br/><br/>Too bad. I thoroughly enjoyed director Alexandre Aja's 2010 update of Piranha and some of the movies he's written without directing. But this one, like The Sixth Sense, has one core secret that the whole movie is based on. Once learned, it can't be unlearned and makes a second viewing considerably less enjoyable.<br/><br/>Recommended for rental.. Don't buy it, folks.
High Tension often feels like a ’70s exploitation movie in the best sense; unfortunately, the ending is so bad that it mars everything that comes before.

The only problem with choosing the Original French Language Director's Cut Version is that the subtitles are not entirely accurate. There were lines added in the U.S. English Dubbed Version, so if you choose to view the film in French, the English subtitles will sometimes display lines that are not being said by anyone. For the US theatrical release, the film was rated R by the MPAA. To achieve this, the film had to be cut heavily. More than one minute of violence is missing in different scenes.<br/><br/>The Korean DVD is censoredwell. Nearly 1 minute is missing in this version. Yes–it's loosely based on the novel Intensity by Dean Koontz. A soundtrack album featuring François-Eudes Chanfrault's electronic score was supposed to be released by Thrive Records in the United States, but it was ultimately canceled. On the composer's official Web site (http://personal.computer.free.fr/web/) a link is available to stream "Faustina Mauricio Mercedes Part IV." If you dig deeply enough through the coding, however, about 30 minutes of audio from the score can be downloaded. The 2005 US DVD of High Tension had to be retouched before its release. However, the content that had to be removed from the movie was not of a violent nature,one might suspect. Instead, the Jack Daniel's logo was removed every time it could be seen. Unfortunately, we do not know why this happened and whether it was someone from Lionsgate or someone from Jack Daniel's who stepped in.
